...Ugandan comedian Hilary Okello leaves Mbabane in stitches
Mbabane Theatre Club was turned into a house of controlled chaos last night as Ugandan stand-up comedian Dr Hilary Okello delivered a performance that had the packed audience gasping for air, wiping tears from their eyes and questioning just how much the human body can shake from laughter.
The
show, part of Dr Okello's Jokes From Far Away tour, was sold out well before
curtain time, a testament to the growing appetite for live comedy in Eswatini.
Fans
filled every available seat, and by the time the night was over, they had
received precisely what they came for, pure, unfiltered, relentless laughter.
Dr
Okello, who bills himself as Africa's Doctor of Comedy, made the trip all the
way from Uganda for the one-night engagement. A former medical professional, he
traded his stethoscope for a microphone in 2017 and has not looked back since.
His prescription for Mbabane was simple no medicine, no rest, just madness from start to finish. Speaking after the show, Dr. Okello expressed his gratitude to the Swati crowd for showing up in numbers.
“Thank you Mbabane, Eswatini, for showing up for the tour. We had fun doing this can't wait to be back again,” he said.
The
comedian noted that his time in the Kingdom left a lasting impression on him,
and that a return visit is very much on the cards.
He confirmed that the Jokes From Far Away tour continues with stops in Johannesburg and Cape Town on May 28-29, respectively, followed by Windhoek, Namibia, on June 3, and then Gaborone and Francistown in Botswana on June 4-5 . Tickets for all remaining dates are available at hilaryokello.com.
Local heavyweights hold their own
...100% English show
While
Dr. Okello was the headline act, the night belonged equally to the local comedy
contingent, who made sure the audience was warmed up, locked in and thoroughly
entertained throughout.
Dr.
Shakes, one of Eswatini's most recognisable comedy voices, delivered what many
in attendance described as one of his funniest sets to date.
He
drew the crowd in with a story about his first time flying Emirates on a trip
abroad for one of his international tours a relatable tale of navigating the
unfamiliar that had the audience howling.
His
ability to mine everyday experiences for comedy gold was on full display, and
the crowd responded accordingly.
Ndosh,
another local favourite, wore two hats on the night, serving as master of
ceremonies while also delivering a standout comedy set of his own.
Balancing
MC duties with performing is no small feat, but Ndosh handled both roles with
ease, keeping the energy in the room high and the transitions smooth. His set
drew loud applause and confirmed his reputation as one of the more versatile
performers on the local circuit.
Cedric
also featured on the night, adding to a local lineup that more than held its
own against the international headline act.
What
the evening demonstrated is that Eswatini's comedy scene is not simply a
backdrop for visiting performers, it is a scene with its own voice, its own
stars and an audience that knows the difference between a good set and a great
one.
.....A sold-out success
For a sold-out event, the atmosphere inside Mbabane Theatre Club was described by those in attendance as electric from the first joke to the last.
The audience remained engaged throughout, responding to each act with genuine enthusiasm. Standing ovations punctuated the evening, and by the time the final set wrapped up, it was clear that the night had delivered on every expectation.
Live
comedy shows of this scale do not happen by accident. The organisation of the
event, the curation of the lineup and the decision to pair an internationally
recognised act with strong local talent created a show that felt complete
rather than lopsided. The local acts did not simply fill time before the main event
they contributed meaningfully to an evening that worked as a whole.
Meanwhile,
for those unfamiliar with Dr. Okello's journey, his rise through the African
comedy scene has been a steady one.
Since
launching his career in 2017, he has performed at Uganda's premier comedy
platforms, including Fun Factory, Comedy Store and Africa Laughs.
That
same year, he placed in the top five of the Next Top Comedian competition at
Theatre Labonita, earning him his first major stage appearance.
The
momentum continued in 2018, when he reached the semi-finals of the NBS The
Comic competition a milestone that marked his television debut and gave his
career a significant boost.
Since
then, he has built a following that now stretches well beyond Uganda's borders,
as his current southern African tour clearly demonstrates.
Mbabane has now been added to a list of cities that have seen what Dr Okello can do with a microphone and a full house. If his parting words are anything to go by, it will not be the last time.
