'A New Dawn' turns a successful year

It was on this day, June 7, 2025, that thousands gathered at the Mavuso Trade Centre for the live recording of A New Dawn, a landmark gospel project by Eswatini singer Nothando Hlophe.

One year later, the album continues to make an impact, earning industry recognition, attracting millions of online views and taking its message to audiences beyond Eswatini's borders.

Marking the anniversary, Hlophe reflected on the occasion with a simple message to supporters and followers.

"It was this day, a year ago when we recorded A NEW DAWN," she said.

Over the past 12 months, the project has grown far beyond a single night of worship. Songs from the album have continued to gain traction on digital platforms, with some recordings collectively attracting millions of views online.

The project has also received major industry recognition, including nominations at prestigious gospel and mainstream music awards, while opening doors for performances and ministry opportunities across different parts of the world.

The success of A New Dawn is the latest chapter in the career of one of Eswatini's most recognised gospel artists.

Born in Manzini Hlophe began her musical journey in church, surrounded by choirs, worship teams and a family environment rooted in music and faith.

Her rise in the gospel industry was gradual. In 2008, she participated in Gospel Challenge, finishing among the top contestants from more than 400 entrants.

During the same period, she performed with Redeem Child, which opened for renowned South African gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration.

The exposure introduced her to larger audiences and created opportunities to work with established gospel musicians.

As her profile continued to grow, Hlophe became a backing vocalist for artists including Frans T Dlamini, Banele Dlamini and God's Property.

In 2015, she joined the Swazi Collaboration project and later made the decision to leave her job as a personal assistant at Explicit Design to pursue music full-time.

That same year, she received three nominations at the National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA), further cementing her place among the country's emerging gospel talents.

Her career reached another milestone when she joined fellow female gospel artists in a project led by South African singer Zaza Mokhethi.

The live recording later formed part of Spirit of Praise Volume 6, one of the region's most successful gospel franchises.

In February 2016, Hlophe recorded her own live CD project at Esibayeni Lodge with support from several local gospel artists.

The same year, she released her debut album, Impilo Yami, which introduced audiences to her powerful vocal ability and worship style.

The project helped establish her as one of Eswatini's leading gospel voices and laid the foundation for a career that would continue to expand across Southern Africa.

Over the years, Hlophe has become known for music that blends contemporary gospel with traditional African influences.

Her lyrics are heavily inspired by faith, prayer and scripture, while her distinctive voice and spontaneous worship style have earned her a loyal following.

Songs such as Esandleni and Khulula Ugcobo attracted widespread attention and helped grow her audience both locally and internationally.

Her recent comeback period has been marked by further achievements, including major award recognition on the African gospel music scene.

Among the accolades she has received are Best of Africa at the Crown Gospel Music Awards and Best Gospel Artist at the National Gospel Music Awards, reflecting the growing reach of her ministry and music.

Against that backdrop, A New Dawn arrived in 2025 as one of the most ambitious projects of her career.

Featuring 13 tracks and collaborations with respected gospel artists from across the region, the album captured a night of worship that resonated with audiences long after the recording ended.

One year later, the project's influence continues to be felt. From award nominations and international recognition to millions of online views and performances on stages beyond Eswatini.

A New Dawn has become a significant chapter in Hlophe's musical journey.

While the album marks its first anniversary, it stands not only as a celebration of a memorable live recording but also as a reflection of the path that brought Nothando Hlophe from church choirs and backing vocals to becoming one of the region's most celebrated gospel artists.

For Hlophe and her supporters, the dawn that began at Mavuso on June 7, 2025, continues to shine a year later.
