The rebirth of Lethumusa

...... Makes intimate debut!!

For the better part of seven years, Lethumusa Simelane was the architect in the background. Operating primarily under his previous stage moniker, Stickx, he was a fixture of Eswatini’s underground music community. 

Basically the quiet sound engineer, producer, and DJ whose studio hours anchored some of the finest independent house and electronic cuts coming out of the country. He possessed a distinct, organic approach to arrangement that won him deep industry respect, yet broader public recognition stayed just beyond his grasp. Local singer Mzwaa famously captured the frustration of his peers, noting that far too many listeners were simply 'sleeping on' Lethumusa's capabilities.

The narrative shifts completely with the arrival of Lethumusa, a self-titled, 12-track debut album that represents a profound creative reintroduction. By casting aside his old moniker to release music under his birth name, Lethumusa has claimed his rightful place at the absolute front of the room. 

The transition culminated on Saturday, July 18, 2026, when the foyer of the Eswatini Theatre Club in Mbabane was transformed from a traditional theatre space into an interactive, high-energy community block party to mark the project's official playback. 

A foundation built on 7 years of sonic evolution

To understand the weight of this self-titled release, one must trace Lethumusa's steady evolution over nearly a decade of continuous music production. As Stickx, his early material was defined by an exploratory, late-night electronic ethos. He spent years sharpening his technical skills, developing a highly specialised mastery over sound engineering, mixing, and the subtle nuances of deep house grooves.

The foundational turning point toward this debut album began to take clear shape in late 2025, specifically with the release of the single 'Esteshini' under the prominent Antidote Music imprint. A warm, heavily syncopated Amapiano-tinged record featuring smooth vocal contributions from Mzwaa and Sarnilo, the track tells the evocative story of a man holding onto hope while waiting for his partner at a local bus station. 

It was a massive departure from colder, purely electronic club tracks, proving Lethumusa could engineer genuine human warmth, jazz-infused piano chords, and deep narrative arcs within modern club music.

This trajectory accelerated rapidly in early 2026 with his second official single, 'Sthandwa Senhlitiyo'  , which dropped just ahead of Valentine's Day weekend.  The track served as a major creative manifesto. Co-produced alongside CeboValz and highlighting the vocal ranges of Nelly Noll and Umzi, the record perfectly fused the regional, hard-hitting 3-Step beat format with the tender emotional vulnerability of Afro-Soul and R&B.

By the time he followed it up in April 2026 with 'Emandla Ami ', a sacred, deeply spiritual three-step collaboration featuring the elegant vocal grace of Zinia, it was undeniably clear that Lethumusa was no longer just making tracks for the dance floor. He was deliberately constructing an extensive, unified musical world.

The Blueprint of a 100% Swazi masterpiece

The resulting debut album is a sprawling, meticulously arranged audio journey that folds all these past experiments into a cohesive whole. Billed proudly as a 100% Swazi project, the tracklist acts as a bridge connecting various contemporary subgenres across Eswatini and South Africa. 

Rather than a random collection of high-energy singles, the record relies on a strict sequential emotional layout. It starts with the intense opening movement of 'Iyakhala ', which benefits immensely from an Afro-Tech edge supplied by Nelson X and vocals from Nelly Noll before stepping systematically through tracks like 'Imphilo'  'Dlalakamnandzi'  'Bambelela'  and the aforementioned radio favourites. The 12-track narrative eventually comes to rest on the breezy, triumphant closing cut, 'Touchdown'.

Lethumusa and co-engineer Qiniso Motsa took great care to ensure that the electronic bones of the album never felt mechanical or cold. They brought specialised session instrumentalists into the studio to track live guitar pieces, acoustic piano chord structures, live basslines, and organic backing vocal arrangements directly over the digital house foundations. 

The writing style behind the project shared this grounded, deeply personal approach. Vocal collaborator Pretty Hle, who leaves a major mark on tracks like 'Imphilo' and 'Bambelela,' revealed that the recording process felt completely effortless because the songs were pulled from real-life situations 

Lethumusa’s extensive history as a trusted collaborator allowed him to pull together a massive roster of local powerhouses. Beyond Mzwaa’s extensive presence across four essential tracks and Nelly Noll’s standout turns, whom Lethumusa smartly scouted during the previous year's MTN Bushfire Firefly artist development incubator, the album features immaculate contributions from Sarnilo, Msimisi, CeboValz, Hailey, Lyrikal Busta, Judah Soul, and Stunner De Royal.

Creating an intimate visual and community space

The album's distinct visual identity was entrusted to fine artist Ntsika Ngcamphalala, whose intentional cover design reflects the deeply personal direction of the entire release. Ngcamphalala notes that the creative execution was grounded by a precise vision brought forward by the producer.

"When we first started working on the vision for the album, there were already a few visual motifs that Lethumusa wanted. He had a mood board prepared that matched his aesthetic goals. I initially sent a few drafts, and we worked from there. What we were going for with this cover was something intimate, warm and grounded. This reflected his new identity because he had decided to drop his stage name for his real name," Ngcamphalala has been quoted as saying to various media houses. 

This intentional atmosphere carried over perfectly into the physical listening party, organised hand-in-hand with cultural platform Kulture and local staple Easy Chows. Rather than choosing a detached, highly clinical corporate gallery space, they designed the afternoon as a lively, casual community block party packed with local food, signature burgers, and interactive party games. Standing directly in front of a packed room, Lethumusa chose not to let the music just play anonymously over the speakers. Instead, he stayed on the floor, personally guiding the audience track-by-track through his creative choices.

The local music community turned out in full force to support the milestone, with live DJ sets and support performances throughout the day from This Is Odd, DJ Tap, Mayas & Teqnosoul, ItsAllBlaq, Obsession, Stunner De Royal, and Ohpis. In a moving nod to the collaborative spirit of the project, guests were invited to use markers to sign a large, physical copy of Ngcamphalala’s album cover art with handwritten notes of encouragement, giving Lethumusa a permanent, sentimental keepsake of the launch.

 In their own words: A triumphant cultural milestone

The immediate reaction from those inside the room made it clear that the project represents an important shift for the local recording landscape. Reflecting on the full playback, peer reviewer Lusoloja Ginindza highlighted the clear creative leap the producer has made.

"I really enjoyed the album. Every track has its personality, but together they tell one story. You can hear how much work and passion went into this project, and I think listeners are going to connect with it," said Ginindza. 

Taking in the weight of the evening, Lethumusa was deeply moved by the room's energy and the strong turnout from his community.

"The album was received really well. People had their favourites but, all in all, they enjoyed it. My highlights were my friends and family showing up to support me. The energies were wholesome and positive. I also appreciated all the media, blogs and broadcasters that documented the event. Lastly, the food and burgers were amazing," he says in an interview. 

When the formal playback wrapped up, attendees spent hours mingling directly with the featured vocalists, capturing photos, and debating their standout tracks from the 12-song collection. It was a celebratory, community-focused conclusion to an evening that did much more than play a new record it permanently cemented Lethumusa Simelane's position at the vanguard of Eswatini’s contemporary music scene.
