That long-standing relationship will take on a public and cultural expression on October 3, when Taiwan Day 2026 takes place at The Crescent Shopping Mall in Ezulwini.
Running from noon to 9pm, the free public event will bring together Taiwanese, Asian and Eswatini food, music, fashion and entertainment under the theme Celebrating Friendship, Culture and Community, with the message “Brighter Friendships, A Brighter Tomorrow.
The event builds on the Asian Food Fair, which has been held over the past three years and introduced members of the public to Asian cuisine and cultural experiences. Taiwan Day expands that format into a broader programme that places the relationship between Taiwan and Eswatini at the centre of the day's activities.
Taiwan and Eswatini established diplomatic relations on. The relationship has developed through cooperation in several areas, including agriculture, healthcare, education, information and communications technology, vocational training and infrastructure-related projects.
Taiwan has operated medical and technical missions in Eswatini, with cooperation extending to public health, medicine, agriculture, education and ICT. Taiwan has also supported projects involving rural electrification and water supply, as well as technical assistance and training.
The two countries have also maintained formal channels for discussing economic and technical cooperation. Historical records from the 1990s show that cooperation included agriculture and handicrafts, while annual economic and technical cooperation meetings were established from 1995. A bilateral cooperation meeting was held in Taipei in 1997, the same year King Mswati III led a delegation to Taiwan.
In more recent years, the partnership has expanded into areas including trade and investment, digitalisation, energy, education, youth employment and women's empowerment. In 2024, the two countries signed memoranda concerning business digitalisation and cooperation between their central banks.
While much of the relationship has focused on development and institutional cooperation, cultural activities have provided a more accessible way for the wider public to experience aspects of Taiwanese culture.
The Asian Food Fair became one such platform, using food as an entry point for cultural exchange. Its development over three years has now led to the larger Taiwan Day programme.
This year's event will include food stalls, exhibitions and cooking demonstrations, alongside performances that introduce audiences to different aspects of Asian culture.
The afternoon programme will feature Kung Fu acts, lion dancing, K-Pop dancing and Asian cooking demonstrations, creating a combination of traditional and contemporary cultural experiences.
The opening ceremony will take place at noon, with a speech by the Ambassador followed by a performance by ACC Drums.
Fashion will form another major part of the programme, with the Taiwan Day Fashion Show scheduled for 6pm.
The showcase will include traditional Asian wear alongside designs by Eswatini fashion creatives. Local designers will also present pieces developed specifically for the Taiwan Day fashion challenge, drawing inspiration from Taiwan and Asian culture through elements such as colour, patterns, nature and textiles.
In 2023, Taiwan's then President Tsai Ing-wen visited Eswatini for the country's 55th independence and King Mswati III's birthday celebrations, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations.
In 2025, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung visited Eswatini as a special envoy for the King's birthday celebrations. During that visit, Taiwan and Eswatini highlighted cooperation in areas including energy, development and other bilateral projects.
The history of the relationship therefore stretches well beyond ceremonial exchanges. Over the decades, it has included government-to-government cooperation, technical assistance, professional exchanges and projects affecting areas of everyday life. Taiwan Day places that history in a more public setting.
Following the fashion show, the programme will continue with dancing and DJ entertainment until 9pm, giving the day a contemporary close after an afternoon focused on food, culture and performance.
Presented in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Eswatini and Luxy Garden Restaurant, Taiwan Day 2026 will bring together several strands of a relationship that began with the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1968 and has continued through successive areas of cooperation.
For visitors, the event offers a day of food, fashion, music and cultural experiences. For the organisers, it provides another public platform through which the long-standing Taiwan-Eswatini relationship can be experienced beyond official diplomatic engagements.
