Titled BirthdaySwaG, the EP was released today as part of what the artist says is becoming a birthday tradition. Following last year’s birthday release, Phatzus has once again chosen to mark the occasion with new music while giving listeners a preview of his upcoming project, Latenites 2.
The three-track project takes a more relaxed approach to his sound, moving between melodic rap, R&B and trap-soul influences.
The opening track, BirthdaySwaG, is centred on gratitude. Phatzus reflects on reaching another year of life, thanking God for protecting him and his loved ones while acknowledging the challenges he has faced along the way.
The song also touches on loss, with the artist remembering people who are no longer alive and reflecting on the belief that they continue to watch over him.
The second track, With You, features Thokoza, Gauteng rapper Jonestu. The two artists turn their attention to love on the collaboration, which is built around a smooth sample produced by Katlego VR.
The track brings a different mood to the EP, with both artists exploring relationships over an easy-going production.
The final song, 4 Cups, returns to themes of ambition and relationships. Phatzus reflects on the demands of hustling while admitting that thoughts of his partner remain part of his everyday life.
Together, the three songs offer an early indication of what listeners can expect from Latenites 2, where Phatzus plans to explore R&B, trapsoul and melodic late-night sounds in greater depth.
For Phatzus, the birthday release is also about creating a body of work around an occasion that is personal to him.
“Every birthday is a blessing. I wanted to create something that reflects gratitude, love, and growth while giving people a taste of where my music is headed. This EP is for anyone taking time to appreciate life and the people around them,” he said.
Originally from Manzini, Phatzus has spent the past few years developing his catalogue while based in Johannesburg. His music draws from personal experiences, family, faith, ambition and everyday life, combining storytelling with melodic and trap-influenced production.
The BirthdaySwaG EP is available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, and YouTube.
The release also sets the tone for Latenites 2, which is expected to explore a more mature side of Phatzus’ music as he continues developing his sound. His music is described by the artist as Highway whipping, sunset beaming. $ikiPiko music.
