The tournament, running until Saturday, 17 October, has drawn an international golfing community that includes visitors from Zambia, Ghana, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany, among other countries. Some participants have travelled with their spouses, extending the experience beyond the golf course and creating opportunities for tourism, hospitality and leisure businesses in the Kingdom.
The opening day set the tone for a gathering that combines the competitive spirit of golf with the relationships, travel experiences and economic opportunities that international sporting events can bring.
Speaking in his capacity as Captain of the Eswatini Nomads, Eswatini Tourism Authority Chief Executive Officer Vusie Dlamini highlighted the role of golf in bringing people together while generating economic activity. The arrival of golfers and their spouses creates demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport, shopping and other visitor services, allowing the benefits of the tournament to reach beyond the fairways.
For Eswatini, hosting an international gathering of this nature also presents an opportunity to showcase the country as a destination for sporting events, leisure travel and tourism.
The presence of visitors from different parts of the world places the Kingdom in the company of an international network of golfers who can experience its hospitality and surroundings first-hand. Such visits can contribute to word-of-mouth recommendations and encourage future travel, particularly when visitors have the opportunity to explore the country beyond the tournament venue. The opening day’s flag-raising ceremony and introductions were important in establishing the international character of the event. With golfers arriving from different countries, the gathering offers an opportunity to strengthen connections between Nomads clubs while celebrating the shared interest that brings members together: golf.
Zimbabwe was represented by captain Rudolf Mugabe, who joined fellow participants for the opening proceedings. The presence of regional representatives reflects the cross-border relationships that underpin the Nomads community, with the tournament providing a platform for members to meet, exchange experiences and enjoy friendly competition.
While the first day centred on registrations, introductions and welcoming participants, the tournament’s sporting programme is set to take centre stage as the event progresses. The three-day gathering gives golfers an opportunity to test their game at Ezulwini Golf and Country Club while building relationships with fellow players from different golfing communities.
Beyond the scorecards, the inclusion of spouses adds another dimension to the visit. Accompanying partners can share in the travel experience, enjoy the destination and participate in the social side of the gathering. This creates a broader visitor experience and illustrates how sporting tourism can bring people to a destination for reasons that extend beyond competition alone.
For the local tourism and hospitality sectors, these visitors represent potential business for hotels, restaurants, transport providers and leisure establishments. Spending by travelling golfers and their companions can circulate through the local economy, while the event provides an opportunity for Eswatini to demonstrate its capacity to host international sporting gatherings.
The tournament also aligns sport with destination marketing. Golf attracts travellers who may combine competition with dining, sightseeing, shopping and relaxation, making it a useful platform for presenting a destination to an audience that may otherwise have limited exposure to it. The experiences visitors take home can help shape how they speak about Eswatini to their families, friends and wider networks. As the 10th Swazi Nomads Nationals moves into its second day on Friday, attention will turn increasingly to the competition on the course. However, the foundations laid on Thursday have already highlighted the event’s wider significance: bringing an international golfing community together, strengthening relationships and opening space for tourism and business activity.
With the final day scheduled for Saturday, the tournament offers Eswatini another opportunity to welcome visitors through sport while showcasing the Kingdom as a place where competition, hospitality and leisure can come together.
