Garments, tailored for greatness

Eswatini's music scene has no shortage of songs about confidence and ambition, but Grixxly's latest release, Garments, takes that idea and dresses it in something more personal.

Released on July 10, through Antidote Music LTD, the single brings together Grixxly, Sarnilo and Young Zesh for a record that sits somewhere between hip-hop, lifestyle and cultural expression.

At its core, the song is about fashion, but not in the shallow sense of expensive labels or designer names.

Instead, Garments explores how the way people dress becomes part of who they are and how they choose to present themselves to the world.

Before the song's release, Grixxly teased the track, describing it as the anthem for all the fashion enthusiasts.

The statement immediately sparked interest among fans, especially after the unveiling of the cover art featuring a clothing label stamped with the words Made in Eswatini for Global Distribution.

The message behind the artwork is simple but powerful. It proudly places Eswatini at the centre of the conversation while suggesting that local creativity deserves a place on bigger stages.

In many ways, it mirrors the direction that many young Swati artists are taking today, creating work that remains rooted in home while speaking to audiences beyond the country's borders.

Musically, Garments carries a smooth and atmospheric sound. The production is built around heavy basslines, airy synths and an unhurried rhythm that gives the song a late-night feel.

It is the kind of record that feels equally suited for a drive through the city or a fashion runway.

When you listen closely, Garments leans into a smooth but confident sound. The production is built around heavy hip-hop drums and deep basslines that immediately give the track weight, while atmospheric synths keep it feeling spacious and relaxed.

Rather than rushing from one moment to the next, the beat moves at its own pace, creating the feeling of a late-night drive through the city or the quiet confidence of stepping onto a runway.

There is also a luxurious quality to the record. The instrumental feels polished without trying too hard, giving each artist enough room to express themselves.

The bass remains steady throughout, acting as the backbone of the song, while subtle melodic elements add warmth and texture.

It is the kind of production that feels equally at home in fashion spaces and music playlists, matching the song's themes of style, individuality and self-expression.

Vocally, the track benefits from the different energies brought by all three artists. Sarnilo's soulful and melodic approach softens the harder edges of the production, adding emotion and richness to the song.

Grixxly's laid-back delivery keeps the track grounded, while Young Zesh injects personality and local flavour through his unfiltered presence and confident cadence.

Together, they create a song that feels effortless, allowing the production and message to work hand in hand rather than competing for attention

The production credits also highlight the collaborative nature of the release, with Grixxly working alongside Sihlangusibiya and Vuyo SZ to bring the song to life.

As a producer and artist, Grixxly has continued to establish himself as one of the country's most interesting creative voices.

Born Sibusiso Malambe, the Mbabane artist has never limited himself to one particular sound. His music comfortably moves between rap, trap and more reflective storytelling.

His musical influences stretch back to his childhood, where his older brothers introduced him to artists such as Outkast, Eminem, T-Pain and Lil Wayne.

Those early influences shaped his love for storytelling and eventually inspired him to begin writing his own music.

Over time, writing became more than just a creative outlet. It became a way of making sense of his experiences and emotions, something that continues to show in his work today.

Meanwhile, on Garments, Sarnilo brings a softer and more melodic energy to the record. Known for her versatility and soulful approach to music, the singer, songwriter and producer has built a reputation for creating music that is both emotive and experimental.

Her multicultural background, being born to a Malawian mother and Swati father, has also shaped her artistry. Through her music, she often blends different influences while incorporating languages such as siSwati and Chichewa into her work.

Her contribution to Garments adds warmth and texture to the song, creating a contrast against the harder hip-hop elements.

The balance works naturally, making the collaboration feel less like separate performances and more like a shared conversation.

Then comes Young Zesh. Few artists have managed to capture the energy of modern Swati youth culture quite like him.

Through his use of local slang, trap influences and unapologetic Swati identity, Young Zesh has become one of the country's most recognisable voices.

His appearance on Garments grounds the song firmly in Eswatini. While the song speaks about fashion and standing out, Young Zesh's delivery ensures that it never loses its local flavour.

He transforms the idea of luxury and style into something more relatable, showing that confidence and individuality do not have to come from foreign trends but can be found within local culture itself.

His contribution reinforces one of the song's strongest messages, being different, refusing to be regular and proudly embracing your identity.

That idea runs throughout the entire record. Fashion becomes a metaphor for self-expression.

The garments people wear become symbols of personality, confidence and belonging. The song celebrates those who choose to stand out rather than blend in.

In many ways, Garments arrives at a time when African creatives are increasingly reclaiming narratives around identity and culture.

Across music, fashion and art, there is a growing movement towards celebrating local stories while presenting them to the world with confidence.

The phrase Made in Eswatini for Global Distribution perfectly captures that spirit. It is a reminder that local creativity does not have to shrink itself to fit global spaces.

Instead, it can proudly carry its roots while still reaching audiences far beyond home.

Together, the trio has delivered more than just another single. They have created a record that celebrates style, confidence and identity while reminding listeners that some of the most compelling stories are the ones that begin at home.
